R Training - Mathematics in R (Bond Business School | Bond University)

The Bond Business School offers students the opportunity to learn about mathematics in the [R] platform.

This course, which will run over a series of sessions in weeks 3, 4, 7, 8 and 10, will focus on bringing all participants to a level of mathematics and R that is above the level of advanced maths in high school. The emphasis is on the practical application and understanding of the math by working through exercises in R that draw on the content delivered in the math lectures. The focus on applying the mathematical techniques and principles should assist those students who have not studied advanced maths at high school. The level of mathematics taught, however, will still involve material that is not covered at high school (and some will be presented in a manner that is not typical of the teaching methodologies employed at that level) and thus this will represent a good refresher for those who may have done advanced math at high school but feel they would benefit from seeing it all again.

R will be taught from an assumption that the participants have little or no prior R experience. Topics and content include:

• Quick overview of R and Rstudio
• Getting started with plotting
• The essentials of downloading and obtaining data from a variety of data sources
• Introduction to statistics using R
• Making the move from scripting to programming
• OLS Regression
• Introduction to GLM
• Developing Shiny Apps

The 5 sessions are as follows:

1. Algebra + R (Week 3)
2. Calculus + R (Week 4)
3. Special Topics in Math + R (basic Bloomberg experience is required) (Week 7)
4. Generalized Linear Modelling (Week 8)
5. Developing Shiny Apps (Week 10)
