Description

QUT TEXTA Book Club for Bright Minds (Years 3 - 5)

This term, we are pleased to launch our new book club, TEXTA, developed in association with the William Robinson Art Gallery, at QUT Gardens Point. TEXTA is no ordinary book club; it's for Bright Minds who love to read and enjoy learning about art. (We will select a new text each term to reflect the changing exhibitions.)

We have selected the book, Flush, as our first text. The subjects, themes and emotions developed in Flush will be used as the launch pad to connect to the current exhibition, Transboundaries.

There will be two parts to the workshop. Students must attend both.

Session One: Pre-workshop preparation session

Date: Wednesday 9 May (4 – 5:30pm)

Location: Queensland Academies Creative Industries (61 Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove)

  • Students will receive their own copy of the book and as a group we will dive headfirst into it – predicting, reading, discussing as we go - in preparation for our workshop at the William Robinson Gallery. Students will have two weeks to complete the book before the workshop.

Session Two: TEXTA Book Club workshop

Date: Wednesday 23 May 2018 (4.00 – 5.30 pm)

Location: William Robinson Gallery (The Gallery is situated in Old Government House on Main Drive at QUT’s Garden Point campus. We will meet at the entrance to Old Government house.)

  • The book club will begin with an exhibition tour by Museum staff. This will be followed by a book discussion led by QUT creative writing staff and held within the gallery space.

Cost: $60.00 (Includes own copy of the book)

Capacity: 30

Students are required to wear comfortable clothes, enclosed shoes, with hair tied back, and bring a drink. All other materials are supplied.

This workshop seeks to:

  • explicitly explore the concept of connection
  • strengthen artistic appreciation skills
  • provide students with the opportunity to develop communication skills including those associated with viewing.

About the Art Exhibition:

Transboundaries features a number of QUT-trained artists whose practices cross over many disciplines. This triennial exhibition is a wide-ranging exploration of interactions between the social and political, ecological, and psychological. It encompasses the larger vistas of economics, science and nature as well as contemporary subjectivity and language.

About the Book:

FLUSH: Take a romp in the swamp with this New York Times bestselling mystery adventure set in the Florida Keys from Newbery Honoree, Carl Hiaasen! Noah's dad is sure that the owner of the Coral Queen casino boat is flushing raw sewage into the harbor--which has made taking a dip at the local beach like swimming in a toilet. He can't prove it though, and so he decides that sinking the boat will make an effective statement. Right. The boat is pumped out and back in business within days and Noah's dad is in the local lock-up. Now Noah is determined to succeed where his dad failed. He will prove that the Coral Queen is dumping illegally . . . somehow
