West End LibraryWest End, QLD
Saturday, Feb 28 from 11 am to 12 pm AEST
Overview

Join author and editor Edwina Shaw as she shares stories from the anthology, 'Queersland'.

This event will be held at Kurilpa Hall.

Join author and editor Edwina Shaw as she shares stories from Queersland, an anthology of remarkable and rarely told stories of Queensland lives from queer writers spanning almost 80 years of rich and dynamic social histories that are as varied as the landscape itself.

Joining Edwina on the panel will be Wolfram Van Keesing and Shane Rowlands :

Wolfram works as a bookseller for State Library of Queensland, and teaches writing at UQ. They've written for FROOTY, QNews, and edited Semper Floreat, but are most recognisable from their work managing volunteers for Brisbane Writers Festival, Brisbane Queer Film Festival, and managing the Zine & Indie Comic Symposium. Their greatest accomplishment, however, is their small-press publication Queer!Content: a series of comix and zines celebrating queer media and identity since 2013.

Shane began composing with words when she was three – improvising story-songs with her plastic guitar. Over the years, she has written for theatre and live performance, screen-based stories and online learning platforms. She is a published poet.

For her, writing and reading is variously sense-making, an anchor, a benediction, a slap in the face, a source of wonder, a sense of belonging, and an invitation to experience all kinds of other lives and worlds.

About the book

Anthology of remarkable and rarely told stories of Queensland lives from queer writers spanning almost 80 years of rich and dynamic social histories that are as varied as the landscape itself. Blending fiction, memoir, poetry and images, Queersland brings to light the struggle to survive in a culture that has barely tolerated difference and at times violently suppressed it. Funny, raw, heartbreaking and brave, the stories shine a light on our potential for sex and love beyond the normativities, and ultimately for our evolution to a more compassionate and generous way of being in our world.

Contributors include:

Dawn Daylight, Krissy Kneen, Steve MinOn, Wolfram-Jaymes Keesing, Paul Andrew, Lucinda Shaw, Sally Mansfield, Ruth Gardner, Angela Wren, Chantal Eastwell, Connor Crossley, David Kelly, Odette Best, Patrick Shepherdson, Jackie Ryan, Garrett Huxley, Grace Doyle, James Tolcher, Hugh Kilpatrick, Robert Phillips, Shane Rowlands, Georgina Maxine, James Lees, Edwina Shaw, and Rod Goodbun (and others).
