Quantum Essentials: Understanding the Next Computing Revolution
Quantum Essentials is an accessible, interactive masterclass designed for professionals who want to understand quantum technology.
Quantum computing is one of the most talked-about emerging technologies, but for many professionals working in digital and technology, it can feel distant or overly complex. As quantum computing and other quantum-based technologies move from research labs into real-world applications, technology leaders need a clear, practical understanding of what this shift means for their industries, their organisations, and their careers.
Quantum Essentials is an accessible, interactive masterclass designed for professionals who want to understand quantum technology without needing a physics background. This session cuts through the hype to provide a grounded introduction to what quantum computing actually is, where it’s headed, and why it matters for cybersecurity, digital strategy, and long-term transformation planning. The focus is on understanding, not coding, empowering participants to engage confidently in conversations about quantum technology and its strategic implications.
This masterclass is led by Dr Guy Barry, Partnerships Development Manager for the Queensland Node of Quantum Australia, the national centre for quantum growth backed by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. Guy brings over 30 years of innovation experience spanning neuroscience, stem cell biology, anti-aging research, and emerging technologies.
Key Topics Covered
- Quantum basics: qubits, superposition, and entanglement, explained simply
- The current state of quantum technology and realistic expectations
- Industry use cases and early applications across sectors
- Quantum and cybersecurity: what leaders need to know
- Skills, careers, and opportunities for women in the quantum future
- How organisations should be preparing (and what not to panic about)
Whether you’re a leader navigating digital transformation, a professional in cyber or data, or simply curious about the technologies shaping the future, this session will give you the language and context to participate in quantum conversations with confidence.
Key Topics
By the end of this session, attendees will walk away with:
- Understand what quantum computing is (and what it isn’t) and explain the difference between classical and quantum computing in plain language
- Recognise real-world use cases emerging across industries including cybersecurity, healthcare, finance, and climate
- Understand the current timeline and maturity of quantum technologies, including realistic expectations for what’s coming next
- Appreciate the implications of quantum for cybersecurity, data protection, and digital strategy
- Feel confident engaging in future discussions, panels, or strategy conversations involving quantum technology
About the Speaker
Dr Guy Barry is the Partnerships Development Manager for the Queensland Node of Quantum Australia, the national centre for quantum growth established with funding from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. In this role, he works at the intersection of quantum research and industry, helping organisations understand and prepare for the opportunities quantum technologies will create.
Guy brings over 30 years of innovation experience across neuroscience, stem cell and anti-aging research, and emerging technologies. He led his own research laboratory at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute investigating conceptual ideas in the human brain, aging, and stem cell biology. In research commercialisation, he worked as a research scientist at Neurocrine Biosciences Inc. in San Diego, California, and has served as CEO at OncoLife Therapeutics (a stem cell-based biotech start-up in Australia) and Magnaetus Therapeutics (an anti-aging start-up in the UK).
Guy’s career spanning deep scientific research through to research translation and commercialisation gives him a distinctive ability to make complex, emerging technologies accessible and relevant for professionals across all backgrounds.
