Quantum Connect – Quantum Basics for Teachers

Quantum Connect – Quantum Basics for Teachers

The University of Western AustraliaCrawley, WA
Wednesday, Mar 25 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm AWST
Overview

A workshop designed to support high school science and STEM teachers to build confidence in teaching quantum concepts.

Quantum Connect – Quantum Basics for Teachers is a fun, interactive professional learning workshop designed to support high school science and STEM teachers to build confidence in teaching quantum concepts.

Delivered by Quantum Girls in partnership with Quantum Australia, this hands-on session introduces the fundamentals of quantum science in an accessible, classroom-ready way. Teachers will explore newly developed quantum education resources, strengthen their understanding of key ideas, and learn practical strategies for engaging students—particularly girls and underrepresented students—who are interested in studying quantum.

The workshop features interactive activities and quantum-themed board games that make complex concepts approachable and enjoyable. Participants will also receive A0 interactive quantum posters to take back to their classrooms and use with students.

The event will also include a special presentation by Donna Buckley (President of the Mathematical Association of WA), exploring how pure mathematics underpins real-world cryptography and how quantum computing challenges the security systems that protect our digital world. Through a storytelling approach, Donna traces the evolution of cryptography from early human pattern-based communication to modern mathematical encryption, and invites participants to consider how 60,000 years of Aboriginal topological mathematics and kinship systems may offer fresh perspectives for thinking about secure communication in a quantum future.

Whether you currently teach physics, mathematics, or are looking to expand your STEM toolkit, this event offers a supportive, engaging space to upskill, connect with peers, and get excited about quantum education.
