QLD Plastics Ban 2023

In June 2022, the QLD Government announced regulations to implement new requirements on plastic shopping bags and a ban on plastic cotton buds, EPS loose-fill packaging, plastic microbeads and balloon releases which came into effect 1 September 2023.

T he ban includes:

  • plastic shopping bags which do not meet new requirements
  • plastic cotton buds
  • EPS loose-fill packaging
  • plastic microbeads in rinse-off personal care and cleaning products
  • balloon releases

More information about the ban: https://qldplasticsban.com.au/

The National Retail Association team is working with the QLD Government to support businesses as they transition, with our team visiting thousands of QLD stores in person, providing resources, a dedicated website for businesses, and answering industry questions via our plastics ban hotline. These support services will continue into 2024 and 2025 as further bans are being considered.
