More information:

The Purple Road Project was initiated by the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre in 2011, to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day which is on 15 June each year.

Elder abuse is largely a hidden and underreported issue, with 1 in 6 older Australians experiencing some form, such as financial, psychological or emotional abuse. (For more information about elder abuse and resources available, please visit this webpage).

Every year, thousands of hand-made flowers that are contributed by community arts, crafts and social groups across WA, are joined together. Collectively, the many flowers represent the vast collection of experiences of elder abuse in our community. The colour purple has long been associated with age and wisdom.

Once complete, Canning's section of Purple Road will be displayed in the library along with resources about elder abuse, and then joined together with many others from across WA to form one large statement piece. Presently, there is over 60m of Purple Road and this is rapidly growing!
