Event description

Description

You are invited to The Quartermasters Arms, for an evening of talk and food - focused on insects. Enjoy three presentations on the science, economics and culture of eating insects – entomophagy. Including three courses of invertebrate hors d’oeuvres to temp your tastebuds and challenge your prejudices.

Eating insects is common around the world, however an abundance of other foods and general ‘ick’ factor has kept them off our tables, until now. Forecast population growth of 30% (9 billion by 2050) will require an agricultural increase of 70% to keep us all fed – impossible. Food production has to get bigger while carbon footprints get smaller, and nothing has a smaller footprint than an insect.

Shasta Henry, Entomologist and science communicator. Educates about the environmental and nutritional benefits of entomophagy and the insect science that drives these values. Think crickets fighting climate change and a greener food trend than paleo

Louise Morris, insect farming entrepreneur. Shares the socioeconomic benefits of insect farming such as developing local food economies and including insects in home food systems. Louise is passionate about growing more sustainable protein sources while reducing waste

Luke Hamilton, culturally naturalised entomophage. Grounded in his insect eating experiences growing up in South East Asia, Luke offers a global perspective while modelling the ease with which other cultures approach insects as food. Using international and cultural examples to show the current scope of this food source

If you are interested how insects effect your body, economy and society, join us.

The project is a collaboration of Tasmanian science, business and culture. Our overarching goal is education and familiarisation; for Tasmania to join nations where insect food has moved beyond the fad phase and onto nutritional, economic and environmental benefit. We aim to shift western entomophagy events from exclusive and gastronomic to accessible and familiar through good information and local produce.
