About this event

Please join Associate Professor Cassandra Cross (School of Justice) and Professor Anup Basu (QUT School of Business) for an event to mark National Scams Awareness Week 2022 to launch findings of a research project examining financial literacy and fraud awareness in those who have self-managed superannuation funds (SMSF). The project reports on findings from an online survey completed by 800 SMSF holders in Australia.

Key findings include:

  • More than half of respondents demonstrated a low level of financial literacy
  • Almost half of respondents demonstrated a low level of fraud awareness
  • One third of respondents demonstrated both a low level of financial literacy and a low level of fraud awareness
  • One third of respondents had made an early withdrawal from their SMSF

With the theme of this year’s National Scams Awareness Week 2022 being “How to spot a scam”, a panel discussion will follow discussing how these research findings can help improve the ability of SMSF holders to protect themselves against fraud into the future. This discussion will be moderated by Associate Professor Cassandra Cross, and feature:

  • Jayde Richmond, Director, Consumer Strategies and Engagement, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
  • Detective A/Superintendent Mike Newman, Operations Commander, Financial and Cyber Crime Group, Crime and Intelligence Command, QPS

This event will be offered in person, and via webinar
