Description

Problem gambling for AOD clinicians, workshop #02

Presenter: Dr Jane Oakes

1 Day workshop, Friday 22nd March

Gambling disorder is the only 'non-substance-related disorder' included under substance-related and addictive disorders in the DSM-V. As gambling related problems often occur for people engaged in alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment, clinicians are ideally placed to identify and respond accordingly to gambling problems experienced by their clients.

The focus of the workshop is to increase awareness and knowledge about problem gambling behaviours. The aim is to enable clinicians to identify people exhibiting problem gambling behaviours and be able to provide some basic harm minimisation strategies to help reduce the risks of ongoing gambling harms.

Lived Experience: The workshop will include a presentation from Nicole Bowering who will tell her story which spans across her lifetime which includes gambling, drug and alcohol dependency. She will discuss how she has been able to turn her life around since completing the Matrix program. Nicole is now a respected member of the Matrix treatment program in her role as a lived experience mentor.

The Matrix program is an intensive outpatient addiction recovery program and is currently the gold standard therapeutic approach for methamphetamine dependence, to hear more about Nicole and the Matrix program we will be discussing click this link.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-26/australia-first-ice-treatment-delivering-promising-results/9787058
