Education Overview
Module 2 builds upon the foundational concepts of palliative care and focuses on strategies to improve the quality of life and health outcomes for patients living with a life-limiting illness. Participants will explore the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions in symptom management.
This education emphasises the importance of advanced care planning in guiding critical conversations that align care with values, preferences and goals. Participants will learn to provide person-centred care focusing on symptom assessment and management to alleviate both physical and emotional distress.
Additionally, this module addresses the ethical and emotional aspects of palliative care, providing participants with the tools to help patients make informed, autonomous decisions throughout their illness, both before and after death.
Learning areas
1. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of advance care planning processes and their significance in patient-centred care.
2. Participants will learn about medications and opioids used with patients, including how to assess patient needs effectively and implement appropriate symptom management strategies. The education will focus on alleviating both physical and emotional distress for patients living with a life-limiting illness.
3. Participants will develop skills to provide person-centred care by considering the unique needs, preferences and goals of each patient throughout their illness trajectory.
4. Participants will analyse the ethical, emotional and practical dimensions of palliative care, equipping them to address the complex needs of patients and families in end-of-life care situations.

The End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education and Training Framework is a tool outlining the essential knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals caring for those with end-of-life needs. It consists of three domains: Principles of Practice, Clinical Management, and Leadership/Management. Each domain's learning items are categorised into three expertise levels: Foundation, Consolidation, and Extension, forming a continuum of learning.
This education is at the Foundation level.
