Education Overview
This foundational course provides an overview of palliative care, including key concepts such as the palliative approach, which prioritises an individual's quality of life despite having a life-limiting illness. Participants will learn to identify the phases of care and develop a shared understanding that palliative care begins at the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, not just in the terminal phase.
Module 1 focuses on debunking common myths about palliative care and deepening a participants' understanding of its core concepts. This education will include a discussion on the following: comprehensive symptom management, the interdisciplinary team approach, communication and shared decision-making, support throughout the illness trajectory, bereavement care, and the importance of self-care for health professionals.
Through group discussions, case studies and resource materials, participants will explore key concepts essential for delivering compassionate and effective care to patients with life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families and caregivers.

2. Participants will learn effective communication strategies to use in palliative care settings.
3. Participants will learn how to support individuals dealing with loss, grief and bereavement.

The End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education and Training Framework is a tool outlining the essential knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals caring for those with end-of-life needs. It consists of three domains: Principles of Practice, Clinical Management, and Leadership/Management. Each domain's learning items are categorised into three expertise levels: Foundation, Consolidation, and Extension, forming a continuum of learning.
This education is at the Foundation level.
