Plein air oil painting in Pine Park

Learn oil painting techniques and paint en plein air in this artist-led workshop

Painting outside, also called en plein air, is a long-standing art practice and a great skill to learn. It helps you see the world in a new way. You learn to notice the changing light and shadows, and capture them quickly with loose brushstrokes. Besides being a fun challenge, it is also a calm and rewarding way to enjoy nature while making art.

Meet at Gallery 1855 in the carpark, and we will walk down the steps or ramp to Pine Park below for this 3 hour oil-painting workshop.

What to expect:

• Learn the fundamentals of colour theory and colour mixing (including how to mix warm and cool blacks)
• Warm-up sketches and learning to find strong compositions
• Using loose brushwork
• Working on coloured grounds, creating a tonal study, and developing a final landscape piece
• Beginner friendly but suitable for those who are familiar with painting
• Basic art supplies provided including an easel, canvas panel, palette and stool

What to bring:

• You'll be sent a materials list closer to the date including suggested oil paint colours
• Wear weather-suitable painting clothes and closed in-shoes, with a hat and sunscreen
• A drink bottle

About the artist:

Liesl Cosh is a South Australian artist studying Visual Art at the Adelaide Central School of Art. She works in oil and watercolour, using loose brushwork, bold colour, and strong tones, letting the paint guide each piece.

Inspired by still lifes, streets, and social scenes—along with impressionist Ethel Carrick—she captures everyday moments filled with light and movement, encouraging viewers to pause and appreciate simple beauty.
