Join Sulman Prize-winning artist Marikit Santiago for an insightful conversation with WSU Associate Professor Anna Cristina Pertierra.

Reflecting upon their lives in Australia, exhibiting artist Marikit Santiago and Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at University of Technology Sydney Anna Cristina Pertierra will discuss the experiences and representation of Filipina-Australians in daily social, political and cultural life. Working across painting and sculpture, Marikit Santiago co-opts her practice with references, imagery, and symbolism from her Australian-Filipino ancestry, Catholicism, and the Western Art canon. Within these pluralities, she interrogates their existing contradictory sensations, values, and ideas.Professor Anna Cristina Pertierra is the Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Anna is an anthropologist with international expertise in consumption and material culture, urban modernities, and media and popular culture. Regionally, her work focuses on Latin America and the Philippines. Anna’s current project is New Consumer Cultures in the Global South, a comparative ethnography of urban consumers in Asia and the Americas.Prior to joining UTS, Anna held several research leadership positions at Western Sydney University, in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts, and at the Institute for Culture and Society.
