Introduction

With the ever-present reality of climate change wreaking havoc across the globe, bringing with it – amongst other things – accelerating extinction rates, talk of the “Anthropocene” continues apace.

The discourse, perhaps predictably, is mixed. Should we sing a requiem and say last rites, or embrace the possibilities of a “good Anthropocene”? Or following others, should we seek an alternative vision of the world’s problems as they are and hopes of what may be by employing different terminology?

Engaging in the discourse of the “Anthropocene”.

The aim of this conference is to engage the discourse of the “Anthropocene” in order to explore what theology – broadly conceived – might add to what must be a multidisciplinary discussion.

How might the resources of our traditions engage this discussion in a creative and meaningful way? In what fashion does theology re-shape the contour of the discussion and provoke exploration in new vistas?
