Physics in the CLOUD: Physics in the Pub is going online and you are invited to the world of NSW physicists!

Physics in the Pub has gone virtual! We’ve digitized and uploaded our scientists and they’ll be streaming to you from the cloud, about the complex protein structures in our cells, how tiny magnets can cure cancer and, well, the philosophy of everything! There’ll be songs, poems and quizzes, so have your device ready. Grab yourself a drink and join us online, with host Dr Phil Dooley of Phil Up On Science.THE LINE UPBiophysicist Miro Astore (Sydney Uni) is going to take us on a tour of the wet, messy dance of life inside cells and show off the weird and wonderful protein structures that stop us from dissolving into hot goop. Uni Wollongong’s physics experiment instructions are conveyed by songs. Their maestro and technical officer Duncan Fisher has declined to join us, so lecturer Lorna Jarrett has put the band together – look out for the punk rock anthem Carrier Lifetime and psychedelic ballad X-Ray Diffraction.Karen Livesey (Uni of Newcastle) confesses to having a 15 year love affair with a magnet smaller than the human hair. As well as being a great conversationalist, the magnet can deliver drugs to destroy tumours and can enable paint to heal its own scratches.Science poet Heather Catchpole (Refraction Media) is back - she’ll be crowd-sourcing space poetry. Have your lilting phrases ready! There’s a lot of hype around quantum computing, says Peter Rohde (UTS). Too may people talking it up – so he’s going to talk it down a bit.Michael Kateifides loves to get on a soapbox and talk physics – he regularly does, on Marrickville Road. This taster of Soapbox science will have all physicists out on the street inspiring the public. Why is there something rather than nothing, ask Royal Society of NSW stalwarts Tibor Molnar and Ian Bryce. They’ll explain how progress on this question is everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Even if your wave function has collapsed, your quantum loop equation won’t solve and philosophers say 16 of your 14 different interpretations of quantum mechanics are wrong, they’ll help you find answers. Or at least more questions. For more information please contact:Dr Phil Dooley (philuponscience@gmail.com) orDr Frederick Osman (fosman@bu.edu)
