Perth Alumni Talks | The Future of Mining
Get the latest insights from UNSW academic leaders and network with fellow alumni in Perth.
The global mining industry stands at a defining moment.
Extraction methods that have remained largely unchanged for more than 75 years are increasingly misaligned with the realities of declining ore grades, extreme operating environments, limited access to water and energy, and rising environmental and social expectations. Yet demand for critical minerals and strategic materials is accelerating toward 2040, placing unprecedented pressure on current systems.
What will mining look like in the decades ahead? And how do we build systems capable of meeting future demand, sustainably?
Join fellow alumni in Perth for an exclusive thought leadership event featuring Professor Serkan Saydam, Chair of Mining Engineering at UNSW Sydney and Director of the UNSW ARC Research Hub for Next Generation Mining Methods (NextGenMIN).
Professor Saydam will explore how the industry must shift from simply adopting new technologies to creating new knowledge, integrating advanced technology and human capital to design mining systems designed for:
- Zero waste
- Zero (net) emissions
- Zero (human) entry
- Improved safety, productivity and efficiency
At the forefront of this transformation is NextGenMIN, a UNSW-led initiative redefining mining through low-impact, digitally enabled extraction approaches built for the challenges of 2040 and beyond.
🎉 Your ticket includes a welcome drink, canapés, and the opportunity to engage with a thriving UNSW alumni community making an impact in Western Australia.
We’re excited to welcome new faces and long-time friends. Guests are welcome too!
