Quantum Connect: Pathways and Understanding to Quantum in the Classroom
A workshop designed to support high school science and STEM teachers to build confidence in teaching quantum concepts.
The Pathways and Understanding to Quantum in the Classroom forum is for principals and teachers. It will be a fun, interactive professional learning experience designed to support principals and one of their science and/or STEM teachers by introducing them to the amazing and emerging career opportunities that will be available for young people if they go the extra mile and choose Physics, Chemistry and higher-level Mathematics course in Year 11 and 12.
The hope is that your school becomes a ‘Quantum Navigator School’, where they work with their students to encourage them to consider future careers in the diverse current and emerging quantum industries.
Delivered by Quantum Girls and Quantum Australia, this informative and hands‑on session will provide information about the exciting career opportunities based in the quantum sciences and introduce the fundamentals of quantum science in an accessible, classroom‑ready way. Participants will explore newly developed quantum education resources, strengthen their understanding of key ideas, and learn practical strategies for engaging students—especially girls and other underrepresented groups—who may be interested in studying the quantum sciences. The workshop features interactive activities and quantum‑themed board games that make complex concepts approachable and genuinely enjoyable. Participants will also receive an interactive quantum poster to take back to their classrooms and use with their colleagues and students.
Guest Speaker: Donna Buckley (Winner - Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools, President of the Mathematical Association of WA)
Donna will explore how pure mathematics underpins the cryptographic “locks” that secure our digital world—and how emerging quantum computing will challenge them. Her storytelling journey spans historical cryptography, real‑world applications, and the profound possibilities of 60,000 years of Aboriginal topological mathematics, such as kinship systems, to help us imagine future‑proof quantum communication.
Whether you are an inspiring school leader or currently teach physics or mathematics, and are looking to expand your STEM toolkit, this event offers a supportive, inspiring space to upskill, connect with peers, and get excited about the future of quantum education.
