Event description

Description

Understanding an ancient theatre in Cyprus

The University of Sydney's Paphos Theatre Archaeological Project commenced archaeological excavations of the World Heritage-listed ancient theatre site of Nea Paphos in May 1995 under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.

Now more than two decades later, and in preparation for the forthcoming October 2019 field season, excavators and specialists who have worked on the site come together to outline our new understanding of the architectural tradition of the theatre, its role within Hellenistic and Roman urban layout of the island's capital city, the finds of ceramic, glass and other materials, as well as the interesting developments on the site in the post-Antique and Medieval eras.

The excavations are supported by the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens and the Nicholson Museum
