Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS)
Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS) is an essential skill for clinicians managing the critically ill. This two-day intensive course equips you with the knowledge and hands-on experience to confidently perform and interpret bedside cardiac ultrasound in time-critical situations.
What you'll learn
- Acquire the five standard FoCUS views (PLAX, PSAX, A4C, Subcostal, IVC)
- Assess left ventricular size and function
- Evaluate right ventricular size, function, and signs of strain
- Recognise pericardial effusion and tamponade physiology
- Identify FoCUS findings suggestive of pulmonary embolism
- Understand image optimisation and common pitfalls
- Integrate findings into clinical decision-making

This course is designed for:
- ICU registrars and trainees
- Intensive care consultants
- Anaesthetists and anaesthetic trainees
- Emergency physicians
- Acute care clinicians seeking FoCUS competency
No prior cardiac ultrasound experience is required.
Course Format
With a maximum of 12 participants and a 3:1 participant-to-faculty ratio, this course prioritises hands-on learning. Focused didactic sessions are paired with extensive supervised scanning practice on live models, ensuring you leave with practical skills ready for clinical application.
CICM Accreditation
This course is CICM-certified and fulfils the training requirements for FoCUS credentialing under the CICM training program.
