Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS)

Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS) is an essential skill for clinicians managing the critically ill. This two-day intensive course equips you with the knowledge and hands-on experience to confidently perform and interpret bedside cardiac ultrasound in time-critical situations.

What you'll learn

  • Acquire the five standard FoCUS views (PLAX, PSAX, A4C, Subcostal, IVC)
  • Assess left ventricular size and function
  • Evaluate right ventricular size, function, and signs of strain
  • Recognise pericardial effusion and tamponade physiology
  • Identify FoCUS findings suggestive of pulmonary embolism
  • Understand image optimisation and common pitfalls
  • Integrate findings into clinical decision-making


Who should attend

This course is designed for:

  • ICU registrars and trainees
  • Intensive care consultants
  • Anaesthetists and anaesthetic trainees
  • Emergency physicians
  • Acute care clinicians seeking FoCUS competency

No prior cardiac ultrasound experience is required.


Course Format

With a maximum of 12 participants and a 3:1 participant-to-faculty ratio, this course prioritises hands-on learning. Focused didactic sessions are paired with extensive supervised scanning practice on live models, ensuring you leave with practical skills ready for clinical application.


CICM Accreditation

This course is CICM-certified and fulfils the training requirements for FoCUS credentialing under the CICM training program.
