Join us for a screening and discussion of Our Mothers’ Land (dir. Leo Plunkett. 2020) and Samin vs Semen (dir. Dandhy Dwi Laksono 2015) in the second week of screenings in the ‘Contemporary Film as a Platform for Democracy in Indonesia’ series produced in partnership between Screening Ideas, the Asia Institute and the Indonesia Democracy Hallmark Research Initiative (IDeHaRI). This screening will be accompanied by a talk from Dr Edwin Jurriens, Senior Lecturer and Convenor of the Indonesian Studies program at the Asia Institute of the Faculty of Arts, The University of Melbourne. Edwin’s research, teaching and engagement interests are in contemporary art, media, culture, language and society in Asia, particularly Indonesia. His most recent books are the monograph Visual media in Indonesia: video vanguard (Routledge, 2017) and the edited volume Digital Indonesia: connectivity and divergence (ISEAS, 2017). His journal articles have been published in Third Text, Continuum, Art and the Public Sphere, Modern Art, Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia, and Indonesia and the Malay World. He is also Asian Visual Cultures book series editor of Amsterdam University Press and IIAS regional editor of The Newsletter. Our Mother’s Land (2020)Our Mothers' Land is a documentary film directed by Leo Plunkett. Featuring the journalist Febriana Firdaus as she travels to different villages, the documentary highlights resistance movements led by women against environmental encroachments in Indonesia. Hundreds of rural communities are currently in conflict with corporations seeking control of their resources in the country. In this film we meet women who have risen to lead social movements, facing violence, imprisonment, and judgement from conservative societies as they fight for their rights across Indonesia. When they push back, they often face the wrath of the state. Winner of the 2021 Wild and Scenic Film Festival Spirit of Activism Award, Our Mothers’ Land is a documentary by The Gecko Project and Mongabay.Samin vs Semen (2015)Gunretno and Gunarti are small-traditional farmers from Kendeng mountain in central Java. They are part of Sedulur Sikep community, the indigenous peoples who still maintain their traditional belief system. Their ancestor is Samin Soerosentiko (Saminism) who led an anti-colonial movement against the Dutch in the late 19th century. Now they have to struggle against the expansion of the cement industry threatening their lands and clean water springs. Samin vs Semen is a documentary from highly-awarded production house WatchDoc founded by media activists, Andhy Panca Kurniawan and Dandhy Dwi Laksono in 2009. This film is part of the Blue Indonesia Expedition (EBI) series produced during a twelve-month long journey across Indonesia in 2015, including a visit to the Samin tribe in the Kendeng mountains in Central Java.
