Barry Drive Building (ANU Campus), 7-11 Barry Drive Acton, ACT 2600 AustraliaAbout this event
Did you study a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) degree and are using those skills in the workplace? Are you working in a different area or applying your studies in an unusual or non-traditional way? Whether you work in research, science-related field or are using your STEM skills in a completely different area - we want you to talk to students about your career pathway and how you got to where you are.
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit charity that encourages young people in their passion for STEM. Each January, approximately 500 Year 12 students from across the country participate in our NYSF Year 12 Program.
A key part of the Year 12 Program is exposing students to the range of career paths available to those interested in STEM. As a part of this experience, we provide opportunities for students to connect with professionals and researchers in an informal "Speed-Meet" format.
During this event, you will talk to a small group of students about your career path. The students might ask you questions about your study, fields of research, current role, how you got to where you are today, and where you might be heading. The focus will be on informal discussions where students feel comfortable asking questions. Students will rotate, so you'll have 8-10 conversations lasting 5-7 minutes (the exact split will depend on the number of participants).
Due to the large number of students attending the Program in 2024, our Canberra Speed-meet will be held as two sessions at the Barry Drive Buildings at the Australian National University on 9 January 2024. You are welcome to attend one or both sessions.
- Session 1: 11.20 a.m. - 12.20 p.m.
- Session 2: 1.30 p.m. - 2.30 p.m.
You will be able to select your preferred session as part of the ticket reservation process.
The final details of the location will be shared with you closer to the event. We ask that you register your interest so that we are aware of the numbers expected and can plan accordingly.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at programs@nysf.edu.au if you have any questions.
Frequently asked questions
No, there's no need to write a speech or similar; this is an informal event with a Q&A format, where students will be encouraged to ask you about your work and career choices. Please feel free to jot down some notes in advance.
January is usually a fairly quiet time on the UQ campus, so parking shouldn't be too difficult. See https://www.pf.uq.edu.au/parking/casual.html for further information on visitor parking at UQ. Unfortunately, the NYSF is not able to reimburse participants for parking or transport costs.
You can easily update the information you provide when you register through the Eventbrite system: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/support/articles/en_US/How_To/how-to-update-your-ticket-registration-information?lg=en_AU
Yes! If you have colleagues or friends you think would be great to speak to these students, please send them the link to the registration page. Participants should be currently working in the STEM field or have studied STEM in the past and would like to share their experiences.
Lunch is not included in the ticket if you choose to stay for both sessions. There are a number of cafes within an easy walk of the venue and areas where you can sit to eat.
