Bruny Island smart battery trial: first research results revealed

The first research results of a household solar and battery storage trial using a world-leading software platform developed at ANU will be revealed at a launch event on Thursday 12 April.

The Network-Aware Coordination (NAC) Platform, an outcome of cutting-edge ANU research funded by the ARENA CONSORT trial, will be officially launched at The Australian National University.

The NAC technology, trialled off the coast of Tasmania on Bruny Island, involved 40 households equipped with solar panels, batteries and battery controllers. In the same way that traffic lights coordinate the flow of cars and trucks on the road, the NAC coordinates the flow of energy from residential solar and batteries to networks and markets to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of the electricity grid.

Expert speakers including Dr Lachlan Blackhall, the newly appointed Head of the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program at ANU and Kirsty Gowans, General Manager, Project Delivery, ARENA will discuss:

  • how the NAC is solving network problems on Bruny Island as part of initial development and testing
  • how the NAC can be used to solve current and future grid challenges by supporting more renewables, providing greater grid reliability, and reducing the costs of electricity for everyone.

Registration is essential. Lunch will be provided.

This event is hosted by the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science and the ANU Energy Change Institute.
