<h2>About the talk:</h2><p>The NSW Department of Planning and Environment in partnership with UNSW's High Performance Architecture team is developing the first phase of the Smart and Cool Spaces project. The project’s goal is to establish a “National Heat Vulnerability Observatory” (NaHVO) and is developing a pilot in Maitland and Dubbo, with a view to scaling the project to integrate Australia’s largest cities. </p><p>While there are currently a range of mitigation and adaptation interventions that can be used to reduce the impacts of urban overheating in the built environment, there are challenges to their implementation due to lack of consistent data and the unique environments of different cities and towns. This <a href="https://www.unsw.edu.au/arts-design-architecture/our-schools/built-environment/our-research/clusters-groups/high-performance-architecture/projects/navho-smart-cool-places-phase-1#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSmart%20and%20Cool%20Places%20Phase,cities%20and%20communities%20throughout%20Australia." target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">project</a> develops rigorous national datasets and an innovative, robust and consistent methodology to report and measure the heat vulnerability and cooling potential of Australia’s cities. It will provide data that will: help identify specific vulnerabilities in cities and towns; provide the ability to monitor heat vulnerability and cooling potential trends; provide modelling tools for scenario testing; and be interoperable with the NSW Digital Twin and other urban networks and government data platforms. This project will generate significant public benefit.</p>

<h2>T﻿he Speakers:</h2><p><strong>A/Professor Lan Ding</strong> is the Convenor of High-Performance Architecture Research Cluster, and STANDARDS Australia Committee Member (IT-268 Sustainable Cities and Communities). She is the project leader of “National Heat Vulnerability Observatory Phase 1: Smart and Cool Places” in collaboration with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, Dubbo Regional Council and Maitland City Council. Lan has led over 20 large research projects in Australia and secured research over AUD 6.5 million in funding.</p>

<p><strong>Scientia Professor Deo Prasad AO</strong> is a world-leading sustainability researcher in the built-environment with a focus on decarbonisation, clean energy and energy efficiency. He is currently CEO of the NSW Government Decarbonisation Innovation Hub ($30-100m including industry funds) engaging key stakeholders in decarbonising the economy while delivering on new jobs and growth. He was also the CEO and chief investigator of the National Research and Innovation Hub for the Built Environment: CRC for Low Carbon Living ($104m).</p>

<p><strong>Dr William Craft</strong> is a postdoctoral researcher in the High Performance Architecture Research Cluster. William has just under a decade of experience working on industry and impact-driven research projects in the fields of urban heat island mitigation, building life cycle assessments and sustainable design and development.</p>

<p><strong>Mr Ben Maddox</strong> is Principal Sustainability Officer at Maitland City Council. Ben has been a Local Government practitioner for over 14 years focusing on developing the strategic direction and business cases for Net Zero Emission pathways for Council operations and the Community.  Building on experience in the application of Life Cycle Assessment principles, Ben is committed to using systems thinking and data to understand and communicate  how built and natural assets can be designed and integrated to created more resilient sustainable and liveable places.</p>
