Share National Conference, Active Citizenship & Community-Led Action: Approaches that Build Local Capacity to Create Positive Change

Event Details

National Conference (www.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/active-citizenship)

Wednesday 6 – Friday 8 November, 2019, Novotel - Parramatta, NSW

The City of Parramatta Council is hosting a national conference designed to share and progress effective approaches to enabling and building active citizenship and community-led action.

Active citizenship - people acting deliberately to contribute to the civic life of their communities and create positive change - is crucial in developing and sustaining healthy societies and healthy democracies.Communities are now also facing complex social, economic and environmental issues, and many people have a desire to participate in civic action to address them.

Civic action is not limited to the political sphere of life, and people can be active to create positive change as social actors, economic actors and cultural actors, to align with the skill sets and interests of individuals. While there are several ways people can take part in creating positive change, people often need support to strengthen the knowledge, skills and confidence required to identify solutions and take action.

This conference is for people and organisations involved in designing, delivering, researching or funding strategies that enhance the capacity of people for civic engagement and creating positive change in the community.

The program aims to ensure that participants can learn from effective approaches undertaken in different contexts, and from the lessons learned by those implementing them. Presentations, guest speakers and workshops address one of three themes: First Nations, Social Investment/Social Enterprise, and General.

Conference Program
Program content and schedule are available from the dedicated conference page on the City of Parramatta's website: cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/active-citizenship.

Final 1/2 Day Workshops
The Conference program includes two half-day workshops on the final morning (9am-12:30pm), Friday 8 November. SPACES ARE LIMITED, and Workshop A restricted, and registration fees and availability reflect this. You will be asked to select your preferred workshop during the registration process.

Workshop A: Restricted session for First Nations women (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander, or other Indigenous women), facilitated by Monica Morgan and Cathy Craigie. This session will focus on approaches and challenges to empowering first nations women and women-lead empowerment

Workshop B: Design Thinking Workshop – facilitated by Ben Pecotich, Dynmaic4. This interactive workshop will provide experience in how to use this technique to help solve complex problems and accelerate innovation. Participants will be given practical tools and guidance on the design thinking process and how it can be used in their work or shared with others looking to create innovative and positive change in the community.
