Description

Monthly Learning with Peers

Monthly Learning with Peers represents an opportunity for pharmacists to:

  • Come together and network.
  • View a selected online CPD podcast together.
  • Complete MCQs and have discussions around the clinical topic and learn from each other in a peer supported session facilitated by your area coordinator.

This session aims to provide pharmacists with clinical information supplemented by knowledge sharing between peers. Individually we have a lot to share due to our unique work experiences. As health professionals that are continually learning there are often many questions that we don’t have answers to. Come along and find out what we can learn from each other and how this might shape our professional development and bridge our clinical gaps.

We encourage you to bring your laptop, tablet or other portable device so that you can log-in and complete the MCQs during the session.

These sessions are held on the first Tuesday evening of each month starting in March and ending in October in selected regional areas due to local demand:

  • Parkville
  • Bendigo
  • Bundoora
  • Clayton
  • Horsham (commencing from April onwards)
  • Swan Hill
  • Wodonga

August Topic: Preparing for PrEP on the PBS

Time: 7.30pm - 9.00pm (Registration at 7pm)

With the PBS listing of PrEP in early 2018, and the subsequent transition of over 15,000 PrEP users onto the PBS, it is paramount that pharmacists are prepared to provide appropriate service delivery with regard to PrEP and HIV prevention to patients seeking it. This is particularly important in areas that may experience a high volume of PrEP prescriptions. These interactive workshops will provide pharmacists with the skills, knowledge and confidence to provide PrEP in an appropriate and confident manner, and provide information and access/referral pathways to potential PrEP users.

Learning objectives :

After completing this activity, pharmacists should be able to:

  • Discuss the current state of HIV epidemic and HIV prevention strategies in Australia
  • Discuss treatment as prevention as an HIV prevention intervention
  • Define pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the specific medications, and dosing
  • Understand current evidence supporting PrEP and identify patients eligible for PrEP
  • Discuss PrEP in light of: early undiagnosed infection, HBV monoinfection, and pregnancy/breastfeeding
  • Describe protocols related to prescribing and providing PrEP
  • Provide information about PrEP to patients, including importance of adherence and process of ceasing PrEP.
