The Parramatta Female Factory Friends has a Bi Monthly Speaker Program. The speakers who are selected for their knowledge of colonial history. convict transportation, female convict stories, contextual. cultural and societal issues of colonial Australia.

From the beginning of the British colony of New South Wales, there existed a need for maternity care not only for convicts but for free women as well. This talk outlines how that need was met and the role of the Female Factory at Parramatta.The focus of this talk will be on one of the Factory midwives - Mary Mumford. It will provide an outline of what we know about Mary from historical documents and will importantly explore the gaps in her story and what they can or cannot tell us about her and the times she lived in.Dr. Lesley Potter is a retired Registered Nurse and Midwife and author.
