Event description
For the first time in Melbourne, hear TARANA BURKE, founder of the #MeToo movement, speak about hope, resilience and our collective power.

About this Event

For the first time in Melbourne, hear Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, civil rights activist, and feminist speak at the Collingwood Town Hall on 18 November 2019.

In 2006, Tarana famously broke the silence on sexual violence with a simple phrase: Me Too. Her activism sparked a viral gender equity phenomenon driven by survivors of sexual assault and their allies.

“#MeToo has no colour, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status. Above all, it’s about helping survivors heal” - Tarana Burke

#MeToo began as a grassroots campaign in New York to support survivors of sexual violence, particularly Black women and girls, and other young women of colour from low wealth communities. A decade on, #MeToo has galvanised a global movement of survivors and advocates united in calling for an end to sexual violence and harassment. In recognition of her tireless dedication to gender equity Tarana Burke has been awarded the 2019 Sydney Peace Prize, alongside NOW campaigner Tracey Spicer.

Join us on 18 Nov 2019 to hear Tarana Burke speak about hope, resilience and the ways we can continue to shift power structures for good.

*** More speakers to be announced ***

Proudly presented by the Victorian Women’s Trust in partnership with the Sydney Peace Foundation with support from our friends at the Australian Women's Donor Network.
