Description

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. - George Santayana (1863-1952)

The 2019 Arthur Cobbold Memorial Lecturer presents a special event for College of Health and Medicine staff and students.

There is a time-honored perception that pathologists may know everything, but that they are always too late. However, on a day-to-day basis forensic pathologists are in a key position to identify illnesses and accidents in the mortuary that may have a significant impact on family members and the community. Advice can be given and proposals can be formulated to prevent similar deaths, an area of medicine that has been called “preventive pathology”.

Professor Byard has focused on childhood injury and death but the scope is much wider. It includes not only accidents at any age, but also suicides, homicides, and certain inherited and non-inherited diseases. Other aspects of this include reviewing historical material to help solve unanswered questions.

Unfortunately one thing is clear - if the community is not helped to remember and deal with these tragic events, they will certainly recur. This lecture will deal not only with Prof Byard's experiences of many such sad cases and deaths over the past few decades, but more importantly how something positive can be derived from these tragedies.
