Memory is for the Future: The Neuroscience of Lasting Change in Trauma

Memory is for the Future: The Neuroscience of Lasting Change in Trauma

Online event
Saturday, May 2 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm AWST
Overview

Join for a practical introduction into how to use the brain's natural process to get real change for people experiencing PTSD.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This practical 3‑hour workshop introduces recent neuroscience and psychology findings that reshapes how trauma can be understood and treated.

Trauma work can be both deeply rewarding and deeply frustrating. Many of us have seen the same pattern: a client feels better in session, understands the story, even has insight, is coping well… and then life pulls them back into the same reactions.

Over the last 30 years, using brain-imaging technology, neuroscientists have made signifcant discoveries in how the brain and nervous system contribute to trauma symptoms. What has emerged provides a window into not just how to regulate or cope with symptoms, but in how to support lasting and positive change with growth that is sustained throughout lifes challenges.

These modern neuroscience discoveries, summarised as “Memory is for the Future”, offer a practical framework for understanding and treating trauma symptoms through a person-led brain-process (mechanism) lens that can be intefaced using existing trauma intervention modalities. The outcome of using a map for navigating trauma symptoms with a set of landmarks that chart the change process is that sustainable change reliably endures beyond the clinic room. In short, peoples lives are restored and they become more resilient.

This session is designed for mental health professionals who who are looking for a scientific backed solution to the unpredictable, hit-and-miss progress that techniques offer. Those who value neuroscience information underpinning what they do benefit largely from this workshop.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe how the brain uses past experience to interpret the present and anticipate the future, and how this process links trauma symptoms across perception, emotion, somatic experience, and behaviour (including hypervigilance, dysregulation, dissociation etc)
  • Explain the brain’s natural mechanism for updating memories, beliefs, schemas, emotional responses and behaviours
  • Apply a 7‑step evidence‑based protocol that uses this natural change process to support lasting and sustainable therapeutic change ( that is compatible with most therapeutic modalities and techniques including CBT and exposure approaches, somatic approaches, emotion focused approaches and so on)

WORKSHOP FOCUS

The workshop will cover:

  • A modern neuroscience‑informed model for understanding trauma
  • How to identify the landmarks that indicate change is progressing effectively
  • How to use the brain’s built‑in change process to support stable and sustainable outcomes with less relapse and sabotage
  • Practical guidance that can be applied immediately in clinical work

WHAT TO EXPECT

The workshop will be highly interactive and practical. You will have opportunities to practice and refine your skills during the workshop, in preparation for use in the clinic.

It is an online workshop, so you will need to have a computer with access to the internet. You will receive an email with the workshop training link closer to the date.

The times of the workshop (9:30am - 12:30PM) are the Western Standard TimeZone for Perth, WA.

WHAT DO OTHERS SAY ABOUT WHAT THEY LEARNT?

  • "Mind Blown!! So simple yet so powerful. Thank you for all your knowledge and practical experience that you bring to this model. This training has changed my way of looking at my life and those of the people I am helping. Your workshop was so informative and filled with so many aha moments for me that I will always treasure the this weekend as I see myself using everything you have shared with us with each and every client I see." Kym Pierce, Perth, Australia
  • "An outstanding course presented by the very knowledgeable and professional Dr Tony Fitzgerald. I highly recommend this course. This course has great value in the neuro-education and outcomes space." Beverley Unitt, Brisbane, Australia
  • "Enrolling in this workshop has been a game changer for me. The practical strategies and insights provided have completely shifted my perspective and approach. Not only did I gain invaluable knowledge, but I also left feeling empowered and confident in my ability to apply what I’ve learned in real-life situations. This workshop doesn’t just teach you—it transforms you. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to take their skills and mindset to the next level!", Brent Dagleish, Northam, Australia

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

This course will be delivered online by Dr Tony Fitzgerald, the Founder and Director of Predicting Better.

Tony was awarded his PhD in Medical Physics in 1997. For the past 25+ years he has been working as an innovation scientist translating emerging science discoveries into valuable medical applications in Universities and Hospitals in Cambridge, London, Leeds, Brisbane and Perth. In that time he has authored dozens of scientific papers and developed 4 patents. He is now a proud and loving father of 2 gorgeous kids in Perth, with the mission to share the paradigm-shifting neuroscience of how our brain's natural processes shape our reality and patterns to help professionals make a difference in mental well-being and human flourishing.
