Memory is for the Future: Clinical Applications in Trauma Recovery

Memory is for the Future: Clinical Applications in Trauma Recovery

Online event
Saturday, May 2 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm AWST
Overview

Join for an introduction to using the brain's natural process to get better outcomes for people experiencing trauma and mental health issues

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This 3‑hour workshop introduces recent neuroscience and psychology findings that reshape how trauma is understood and treated. These discoveries—summarised as “Memory is for the Future”—offer a practical framework for working with trauma in a way that supports sustainable change rather than repeated reprocessing.

The session is designed for mental health professionals who want a clearer structure for formulating trauma presentations, recognising when treatment is on track, and supporting progress that holds outside the therapy room.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Describe how the brain uses past experience to interpret the present and anticipate the future, and how this process links trauma symptoms across perception, emotion, somatic experience, and behaviour
  • Explain the brain’s natural mechanism for updating memories, schemas, and emotional responses
  • Apply a 7‑step evidence‑based protocol that uses this natural change process to support lasting and sustainable therapeutic change, independent of modality.

WORKSHOP FOCUS

The workshop will cover:

  • A neuroscience‑informed model for understanding trauma
  • How to identify when trauma treatment is progressing effectively
  • How to use the brain’s built‑in change process to support stable outcomes
  • Practical guidance that can be applied immediately in clinical work
