Description
New housing in Australia is often designed as an investment vehicle rather than a place to live, often not meeting the needs of the people living there. In response, some communities are banding together to create their own housing collectives. This way they can focus on high-quality design, sustainability and shared facilities, while saving money in the process.
In this workshop, participants will get a crash course in community-led housing, working with potential future neighbours to make collective decisions about their own development. With a focus on intergenerational living and ageing in place, participants will negotiate a hypothetical budget and brief for a small-scale community of 6-8 homes.
This event aims to given participants a practical introduction to the benefits and challenges of citizen-led development. Through a series of group activities participants will work together to decide how to allocate budgets and space, negotiate town planning controls and ultimately come up with a design for their own small community.
This event is conducted in collaboration with the Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC) from the University of Western Australia. Find out more at https://www.audrc.org/
