About this Event

Chief Winemaker Luke Whittle:

Luke’s winemaking career began in New Zealand, working part time in a West Auckland winery in 2007 while completing a degree in Wine Science at the University of Auckland. After several vintages in NewZealand Luke made the move to Central Victoria to work with the Balgownie Estate in 2011. Having gained experience in vintage winemaking in Canada and Germany, Luke was drawn to Tasmania in 2015 to pursue an ever-growing passion for cool climate wines. Luke returned in 2016 and in September was appointed as Senior winemaker with Pipers Brook Vineyard. He’s passionate about Tasmanian produce, and in his free time, you’ll find him diving for freshly caught seafood (obviously to enjoy against a cool climate wine)!

Pipers Brook Vineyard:

Pipers Brook Vineyard was established in 1974 by the pioneering Dr Andrew Pirie, in his search for the "terroir" of the famous French cool-climate areas of northern France in Australia. Since then the area has becoming widely recognised as a premium sparkling producing region, and we’re very proud to have been established by this Rockstar of Tasmanian wine. The business changed hands in 2003 but the passion for producing premium cool climate wines has remained to the present day. Pipers Brook Vineyard is one of our 6 sites in Northern Tasmania, and from these vineyards we produce our 3 labels, Kreglinger Sparkling, Pipers Brook and Ninth Island wines. With a team of passionate winemakers, we’re proud of our history, heritage and journey to this day, and very proud of the wines we’re producing. The dramatic vineyard slopes of the Pipers Brook region, cooled by gentle ocean breezes, alongside the deep, free-draining volcanic soil provide an ideal climate for ultra-premium sparkling wine production. This terroir is critical to our vine prosperity, creating a slow and mild ripening period that enables our grapes to develop a full spectrum of flavours, resulting in sparkling wines of rare richness and intensity.
