Masterclass: Pitching in Publishing

Emerging Writers' Festival

Presented by Victoria University
There are countless advantages to having a good pitch for your book. It makes your writing stand out before the publisher has read the first word, getting them excited about your work. A great pitch can sell a novel. So what should your pitch include? How important is a good synopsis? Do you need to get an agent before approaching a publisher? This masterclass will help you practice, prepare, and pitch like a pro!

10am: From Prize to Publication
The Richell Prize for Emerging Writers is one of the most valuable prizes for an up and coming writers’ career. (We would say that though, wouldn’t we?) It’s not all about winning though – even making the shortlist can get you noticed. Before the prize closes on July 3rd, come and hear from a previous winner and shortlistee and their publisher about what makes a good synopsis, how to write a compelling chapter breakdown, and what the prize could do for your career. And then submit!
With: Sally Abbott, Brodie Lancaster, Robert Watkins

11am: Get Smart
Having a literary agent is not always necessary and many writers decide they don’t need one. But often a publisher is more likely to look at a manuscript sent to them by an agent. So what, exactly, does an agent do for you? And how do you get one? What does the relationship entail? This session explores the ins and outs of working with a lit agent.
With: Grace Heifetz, Jacinta Di Mase, Sarah Vincent, Natalie Kon-yu

12pm - 1pm: Lunch

1pm: Process of Publishing
A unique behind the scenes perspective of publishing – find out how the best in the business like to be approached by writers, how they find new talent and your best pathways to publication. How can you stand out in a crowded marketplace? What do these commissioning editors look for?
With: Kate Stevens, James Read, Marisa Pintado, Enza Gandolfo

2pm - 3.45pm: Refine your Pitch Workshop
So you’ve done the hardest part: you've actually written a publishable book. Congratulations! But before you can convince a publisher to buy your manuscript you'll have to get them to read it in the first place. What’s unique about your book? Why should they read it? This workshop will help you refine and practice your pitch, so you can get your manuscript read by the people who can get it published.
With: Rose Michael, Nadine Davidoff
