March FORUM - Guest Speaker: Elsie Salkeld
Salkeld will discuss her experience studying at the QCAD and how that shaped her practice and her understanding of contemporary sculpture.
Elsie Salkeld (ARTSalkeld) is a Meanjin/Brisbane artist working across both sculpture and jewellery. Her practice is influenced by feminist art history, the Arts and Craft movement and female labour. She experiments with mediums, translating textile techniques into copper works, whilst also remaining faithful to the traditional textile functionality. She is interested in how the material of her works changes the context of how craft is perceived by the contemporary art world.
In 2024, Salkeld graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University. She has recently exhibited works at PATCHWORK ARI’s Launch Party, 2026 (VENTSpace), When We Grow Up, 2025 (Ipswich Community Gallery), as well as exhibiting two works in the outdoor section of the Brisbane Sculpture Festival with Sculptors Queensland. Salkeld is about to start her honours research at the University of Queensland, focusing on contemporary textile craft and craftivism.
At this month’s Sculptors Queensland Forum, Salkeld will discuss her experience studying at the Queensland College of Art and Design and how that shaped her practice and her understanding of contemporary sculpture. She will dive into the theories behind her current working thesis on Arts and Craft in contemporary art and its connection to Granny’s Copper I &II that were shown in the recent Brisbane Sculpture Festival. She will also discuss her current career path in the arts and the broader arts scene for emerging artists in Meanjin.
