Making Time 

AIRspace Projects is a not-for-profit artist-run initiative in Marrickville, Sydney, with a focus on cross-cultural, inter-generational and cross-disciplinary practice. AIRspace Projects is dedicated to exhibition and curatorial ideas from both emerging and established local, national and international practitioners who make ambitious, inspiring and inventive contributions to art processes and discourses. We aim to pursue both solo and thematically curated exhibitions to extend and deepen an understanding of artistic practice while facilitating an exploration of art and its relationship to the world. AIRspace Projects will run parallel events and performances as a way of bringing together a number of practices and discourses at any one time. AIRspace Projects looks forward to continued growth and also aims to extend its activities to site-specific locations and participation in exchanges and residencies.

Making Time Workshops are presented as part of the exhibition Playdate 
Facilitated by visual artists, Alex Falkiner and Paula do Prado, the Making Time workshops expand on the concepts of play, collaboration and building mutual respect through creative exchange. The workshops aim to provide an opportunity for parents/carers and their child* to “make time” for each other and connect through art making. These workshops focus on experimentation, engagement with materials and non-tool based techniques such as wrapping, taping, knotting, threading, assembling and arranging. Rather than working towards a pre-determined outcome, participants will be guided through a series of process based strategies and techniques to create a memento of their shared creative experience.  
*this workshop is intended for mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, adult siblings or cousins and any other carers who have a close relationship with a child between the ages of 4 and 12 years of age.

ABOUT THE FACILIATORS
Alex Falkiner
Alex is a play-based artist, maker, tinkerer and curiosity advocate! She uses ‘making’ to satisfy her inner perfectionist (knitting) and her inner rebel (art!) and loves to create opportunities for others (of all ages) to follow their curiosity and learn about themselves through making, play and material exploration. With a background in textiles, costume and millinery and studies in Education Alex brings a wide range of technical skills to her making and an deep interest in how we learn and flourish. She enjoys disrupting the rules of both traditional textiles and education to make way for something more nourishing, respectful, enjoyable and responsive.

Paula do Prado
Paula is an artist and mum of one. The exhibition Playdate showcases her art making practice developed alongside her son Tomas who is now five.  Paula is of mixed Afro-Uruguayan and European ancestry. Her work explores her experience as a first generation migrant and as a non-indigenous brown woman navigating Australian culture and its ongoing and problematic colonial history.  Predominantly using textiles, her work is highly personal and autobiographical, it oscillates between playful and tragic ambiguity to reference universal human preoccupations with belonging, cultural and gender identity.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Each workshop is limited to 4 adult + child pairings (total 8 participants per session) 
Tickets are $20 per pair (one adult + one child)
There are two (2) sessions being offerred:
Saturday 4th August 10am-12pm  or   Saturday 11th August 10am-12pm
Both sessions onsite at AIRspace Projects
Disclaimer:  At the end of this workshop you wont be taking home a completed artwork, a painted plaster mould, a paper bag mask with holes for eyes or your own clay magnet. By the end you may have made something out of cardboard and string with bits tied to it. And hopefully in time it won't matter to either of you if what you’ve made is not as aesthetically pleasing as you secretly desired it to be. You’ll be taking home an experience. An experience that has maybe affirmed or triggered a feeling or idea: to play more, enjoy the moment and bask in the pleasure and sometimes pain that is learning about ourselves through the young people around us.
