The University of Adelaide invites you to contemplate the vastness of space and the limitless worldwide potential in this exciting industry.

Our speakers will share stories about their journeys into, and incredible work in, aerospace. They will discuss Australia’s future in the space industry and the amazing opportunities that lie ahead.

Following the presentation, join us for a Q&A where the audience will be invited to ask questions.

The Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Science is proud to present four of its most celebrated alumni:


Dr Andy Thomas AO - NASA astronaut and veteran of 177 days in space.

Dr Thomas retired in 2014 after 22 years with NASA. South Australia’s first astronaut, his achievements include four space flights, 177 days in space, a spacewalk, and four months living in zero gravity on the Mir space station. Dr Thomas’ PhD from the University of Adelaide is in Mechanical Engineering.


Dr Kimberley Clayfield - Executive Manager of Space Sciences and Technology at CSIRO.

Dr Clayfield is responsible for the coordination and support of CSIRO's space-related activities, and helps to guide Australia’s space technology agenda. Dr Clayfield’s PhD from the University of Adelaide is in Mechanical Engineering (Fluid Mechanics & Combustion).


Dr Justin Hardi - Group Leader - Combustion Dynamics Group at DLR, Germany’s National Research Center for Aeronautics and Space.

Dr Hardi leads the Combustion Dynamics Group at the German Aerospace Center. He is a highly experienced Rocket Propulsion Research Engineer. His PhD is in Propulsion Engineering from the University of Adelaide, where he was also awarded a research medal.


Andrea Boyd - ISS Flight Operations Engineer at the European Astronaut Centre.

Andrea Boyd is Australia’s only International Space Station (ISS) Flight Operations Engineer, based at the European Astronaut Centre in Germany. She is a Mining Control Specialist, with over 10 years’ experience in automation, mining and aerospace. Ms Boyd has qualifications in mechatronic engineering from the University of Adelaide.
