Overview

Making Effective Presentations

This workshop supports the ANU 3 Minute Thesis and Visualise Your Thesis competitions.

There’s no escaping the world of ‘chalk and talk’ (or PowerPoint and chat as it is these days); to get on these days you have to be able to talk about what you do to any audience, anywhere and at any time, in a way that can be understood by anyone. This workshop will show you how to stand at the front of a crowded room and mesmerize the audience with your presentation skills.

By the end of this workshop you will:

  • Know how to craft your research into a great story and then structure it for an oral presentation
  • Understand the confidence, techniques and theatricality needed to deliver a great presentation
  • Learn how to read any audience and tailor your talks to them

This workshop will be presented by Simon Clews from the University of Melbourne, author of The New Academic (coming from NewSouth books in September this year), who has spent the last decade and a half encouraging, motivating and training academics to engage with the world beyond the academy.
