About this event

There are few things more disheartening than watching your veggie garden fall victim to pests or diseases and seeing your beautiful plants disappear before your eyes.

Luckily, there’s ways to protect your precious crops from pests and diseases, including many organic ways which avoid excess chemicals and keep your helpful garden critters safe!

Join us for Maintaining a Healthy Garden – Pests, Diseases, Crop Protection – the fifth workshop in our ‘Growing Food Through the Seasons’ series hosted by Fiona from Ainslie Urban Farm in collaboration with the Suburban Land Agency.

In this two-hour session, Fiona will introduce you to the basics of plant health, so you can learn how to grow healthy and resilient plants. You’ll also learn organic ways to manage any pests and diseases that do arise.

You’ll be learning theory about topics including:

  • The Plant Health Pyramid, which explains the root causes of pests and diseases
  • How to identify pests and diseases
  • Managing pests and diseases organically
  • Protecting crops from predators

You’ll get your hands dirty too, with these practical elements:

  • We’ll do some gentle weeding in garden beds, where you can learn the best tools and tricks to remove weeds with ease
  • We’ll plant some legumes that you can eat and use as a green manure crop to fix nitrogen in your soil

What to Bring: Please bring a notebook to take notes, your gardening gloves, a hat, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a water bottle, and wear clothes and shoes you are happy to do some (light) gardening in!

Spaces: There are 25 places available in each workshop.

Where to Meet: Meet at the SLA Sales Suite at the Innovation Precinct at the SLA's Display Village in Whitlam.

Weather: We’ll cover our theory component indoors. Please bring a rain jacket and wear clothes and shoes suitable for outdoors, but we will cancel the outdoor component in the event of severe rain or storms.

If the cost of this workshop may limit your ability to attend, please contact the SLA Sustainability Team on SLA.SRC@act.gov.au to discuss options.
