Event description

Description

The Macquarie Ancient Languages School (MALS) provides an opportunity to engage with ancient cultures through the study of their languages in a friendly and stimulating environment. Each year we run a Summer Week in the second week of January and a Winter Week in early July.

This Summer Week MALS is offering intensive courses in Classical Greek, Biblical and Patristic Greek, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Coptic, Hebrew, Australian Aboriginal Languages, Akkadian, and Hittite. For full course details (course levels, texts, tutors, timetable etc.) please visit www.mals.org.au.

Our week-long session will run on the Macquarie University campus (North Ryde, NSW). It will be led by our team of dedicated tutors, many of whom are postgraduate students embarking on research in relevant fields or language teachers working in the secondary or tertiary sector.

The School employs methods designed to support adult learners (16 years of age and up) from a wide range of backgrounds. You may, for instance, be a university student wanting to begin your engagement with ancient languages or strengthen existing skills and experience. You may be someone who has always been wanting to learn one of the languages we offer or one of our many MALS veterans who enjoys exploring new texts with like-minded people.

Can I enrol in more than one course?

No. Each course runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday for the duration of the Summer Week.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Macquarie University campus can be reached directly by car and bus during the MALS 2019 Summer Week. The Macquarie University Train Station will be closed in January 2019. Additional bus services will be provided. For more information about planning your journey consult the Macquarie University website.

Casual parking on the Macquarie University campus is available. The University has moved to a new PAYG system. For more information about parking consult the Macquarie University website.

Casual parking costs $10 for 0-1 hour and up to $40 for 6+ hours. At this stage MALS cannot offer its discounted rate for students. We are working to change this and will email enrolled students if this situation changes by mid-December.

What is the daily timetable?

On Monday 7 January we will meet at 9.00am (teaching to commence at 9.30am) for allocation of classes and the opening of the School. This will take place in the central meeting area also used for morning and afternoon teas. The location will be finalised later in the year, so check back here in December for precise directions.

All courses will run Monday to Friday from 9.30am–4.30pm. Morning sessions generally run from 9.30am to 12.30pm, including a half-hour morning tea break. There is a lunch break from 12.30pm until 1.30pm, during which a 30min special lecture or other event will be offered. A lecture timetable will be released later in the year, so check back here in December for more information. Afternoon sessions run from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, including a half hour afternoon break.

The daily timetable for MALS has temporarily been pushed forward by half an hour. Usually we start at 9.00am and finish at 4.00pm each day. We have made the timetabling change for the Summer Week because of potential disruptions to travel caused by the closure of the Macquarie University Train Station. For more information see below.

What's the refund policy?

Full refunds will be issued for those who notify MALS of their inability to attend before the cancellation deadline (10 December for the 2019 Summer Week). MALS will charge a $100 late withdrawal fee for cancelations after 10 December. This withdrawal fee is a new administrative measure aimed at minimising cancellation of classes, and thus disruption to other enrolled students. If you have any questions please email mals@mq.edu.au prior to enrolment.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes. Please send us an email (mals@mq.edu.au) detailing any changes to your registration information.
