Image credit: ‘Yanhambabirra Burambabirra Yalbailinya’ (Come, Share and Learn), 2020 by Luke Penrith for the One Sydney, Many People Strategy. In May 1982, a group of Meriam le, Eddie Koiki Mabo, Rev. David Passi, Celuia Mapoo Salee, Sam Passi and James Rice began their legal claim for the ownership of their islands, Mer, Waier and Dauar island in the eastern Torres Strait. After a failed Qld government challenge in the late 80s, in June 1992 the High Court of Australia found in favour of Meriam le, thus recognizing native title and ending the myth of terra nullius. The decision, known to many as the Mabo decision, told the rest of Australia what Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders already knew - ‘Always was, always will be…’Please join us to celebrate Mabo Day at an event featuring a cultural performance by Harbour Beizam and a keynote presentation by Kaiya Aboagye. Kaiya is a Ghanaian, Aboriginal, South sea and Torres Strait Islander PhD candidate at the University of Sydney. Her research unpacks some of the substantial and significant connections shared between First Nations and African Diasporic peoples in Australia and throughout the Black Pacific. Kaiya hopes her research will disrupt common assumptions about the “Black experience” in Australia and decolonize the ways we have come to teach, learn and engage with African histories in the global south. Her work also question’s the erasure of Black-Oceanic Indigenous histories within broader global Black studies. We will also hear from Professor Jennifer Barrett, Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous (Academic) and Director of the National Centre for Cultural Competence (NCCC), on Uncle Eddie Koiki Mabo’s legacy and the ongoing significance of this decision. Please join us for lunch following the event. This event will also be live streamed online and can be viewed at the URL belowhttps://events.livecrowd.tv/maboday3june
