The University of Sydney, in partnership with Diversity & Inclusion and Indigenous Strategy and Services, and the Indigenous Employment and Engagement Team, invites you to join us in celebrating Mabo Day 2024...

In May 1982, a group of Meriam le, Eddie Koiki Mabo, Rev. David Passi, Celuia Mapoo Salee, Sam Passi and James Rice began their legal claim for the ownership of their islands, Mer, Waier and Dauar island in the eastern Torres Strait. After a failed Qld government challenge in the late 80s, in June 1992 the High Court of Australia found in favour of Meriam le, thus recognizing native title and ending the myth of terra nullius.

This year we have a keynote address from Toby Cedar. Toby is a proud Torres Strait Island man born in Dampier Western Australia in 1978. His bloodlines being from both Eastern and Western Islands of the Torres Strait. He comes from the Peiudu tribe Erub (Darnley Island) with his lubabat (totem) being Wada (frigate bird), Op Nor Beizam (Tiger shark), Deumer (Torres Strait pigeon) and wind identity – Koki (North West).
