Join us for a screening and discussion of Lukas’ Moment (dir. Aryo Danusari, 2005) and a trio of animated short documentaries (dir. Kartika Pratiwi/ AJAR 2019, 2021) in the third week of screenings in the ‘Contemporary Film as a Platform for Democracy in Indonesia’ series produced in partnership between Screening Ideas, the Asia Institute and the Indonesia Democracy Hallmark Research Initiative (IDeHaRI). This screening will be accompanied by a talk from Dr Ken Setiawan, Senior Lecturer in Indonesian and Asian Studies at the Asia Institute, and an Associate at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS) at the Melbourne Law School. Ken’s research interests include globalisation and human rights, historical violence and transitional justice, as well as gender and civil society. She publishes widely on the politics of human rights in Indonesia. Her most recent book, co-authored with Dirk Tomsa, is Politics in Contemporary Indonesia: Institutional Change, Policy Challenges and Democratic Decline (Routledge, 2022).LUKAS' MOMENTLukas is a 19-year-old Marind fisherman in Papua, who is trying hard to finance his own education. Indonesian filmmaker Aryo Danusiri follows the young man through his daily life - giving his audience a new perspective on Papua, a province of Indonesia where the locals regard the central government with deep suspicion. Instead of reproducing Papua through the oft-seen and ubiquitous images of violence and conflict, the filmmaker uses his camera to create an intimate, observational, and emphatic story about Lukas. Beginning with a slow and atmospheric rhythm, Danusiri follows his attempts to sell his catch to the market in the capital city without going through middlemen, leading to difficulties. This film chronicles the drama of an indigenous people, particularly their youth, whose cultural identity and livelihoods remain marginal to the Indonesia nation-state.Three animated short films: A DAUGHTER'S MEMORY, KONTA-SAI &amp; 8:45The animated documentaries ‘A Daughter's Memory’, ‘Konta-sai’, and ‘8:45’ are based on testimony of real-life accounts of what took place in Indonesia and Timor-Leste during periods of conflict. The documentaries are told in the survivors’ own voices. Asia Justice and Rights, KontraS Aceh, and ACbit (Timor-Leste) through the project, Making Right to Truth Tangible, produced the films 8:45 and Konta-sai.
