Love and War: Stories from World War I and II

Anzac Square & Memorial GalleriesBrisbane City, QLD
Sunday, Feb 15, 2026 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am AEST
Overview

Hear poignant stories of love, loss and reunion from World War I and II.

During times of conflict, love and relationships continued to play an important role in the lives of service personnel and those left behind on the Homefront. Few relationships were left untouched by the scale and devastation of World War I and II.

Back by popular demand, this talk will feature new romances and personal stories, as well as showcasing emotive historical artifacts, images and letters from State Library’s collections.  Join us at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries as we explore:

  • The beauty and sentiment of love letters exchanged between Queensland soldiers and their sweethearts during World War I and II.
  • The vast impact on social customs and relationship practices, including swifter courtships, marriages of convenience, the emergence of war brides and the sorrow of war widows.
  • And the tragic tale of WWII dambuster Charles Rowland Williams and his English fiancé, Bobby.

After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries, embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.

Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
