Literary Salon with Emily Maguire and Special Guests

Join Emily Maguire, Tessa Rose, Chloë Callistemon, Ben Hobson, Mindy Gill and Rebecca Jessen for an evening of fine words, warm anecdotes, and cheap wine.

About the Artists

Emily Maguire is the author of five novels and two non-fiction books, a teacher and mentor to emerging writers and an ambassador for the Stella Prize Schools Program. She has twice been named as a Sydney Morning Herald Young Novelist of the Year. Her latest novel, An Isolated Incident, has been short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award and shortlisted for the Stella Prize and the ABIA 2017 Literary Fiction Book of the Year.

Rebecca Jessen lives in Brisbane. She is the award-winning author of verse-novel Gap (UQP, 2014). In 2015 Rebecca won the QLD Premier’s Young Publishers and Writers Award. She has just been short-listed for the 2017 Arts Queensland Val Vallis Award. Rebecca's writing has been published in Overland, Meanjin, The Lifted Brow, Going Down Swinging, Cordite Poetry Review and many more. She has recently discovered that she is a cat person.

Mindy Gill is a poet whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in Australian Poetry Journal, Mascara Literary Review, and Island Magazine. She has won the Tom Collins Poetry Prize, has just been short-listed for the 2017 Thomas Shapcott prize, and is a Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellow. She is Peril Magazine’s editor-in-chief.

Ben Hobson lives in Brisbane and is entirely keen on his wife, Lena, and their two small boys, Charlie and Henry. He currently teaches English and Music at Bribie Island State High School. In 2014 his novella, If the Saddle Breaks My Spine, was shortlisted for the Viva La Novella prize, run by Seizureonline. To Become a Whale is his first novel.

Tessa Rose writes poetry. She has been published in Cordite Poetry Review and Today, the voice you speak with may not be your own, and has performed her work at Queensland Poetry Festival, COUPLET, Woodford Folk Festival, Noted Festival and others. She is one half of 24 HOUR GYM alongside the visionary Pascalle Burton, and has performed as part of the Fanciful Fiction Auxiliary at The Woodford Planting Festival and Brisbane Powerhouse. Her poems are concerned with place, girlhood, and dreams, and are particularly
inspired by Emily Deschanel and David Lynch. She lives in Brisbane.

Chloë Callistemon is a photographer, filmmaker and writer. Her poetry and multimedia have been published in journals and anthologies including Cordite, Rabbit, Australian Poetry Journal, Australian Love Poems and Contemporary Australian Feminist Poetry. She is a PhD candidate at Griffith University, Queensland.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This event is for participants aged 18 years and above. If you are accessing the QWC member tickets you may be asked to show proof of membership.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Red Box is located on Level 2 of the State Library of Queensland.

There are several parking and transportation options:

  • Parking underneath State Library or Queensland Museum costs $16 per entry.
  • There is limited street parking available on Merivale Street, Montague Road and Hope Street at an hourly rate.
  • A drop-off point is located on the ring road outside SLQ, next to the bus stops.
  • The Cultural Precinct BusWay and South Brisbane Train Station are a short walk from State Library.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
