Why do we need this information?

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer (LGBTIQA+) and many others in this broad community may require differing approaches compared to their peers, and often experience various barriers when seeking help or accessing services.

For those connected with this community, it is essential for them to feel safe, respected and valued for their own wellbeing. Staff in supportive roles can often feel unsure how to respond to them, what actions to take to support them, and how to address certain issues.

Who will deliver the content?

The training is delivered by staff from Bfriend, an LGBTIQA+ service operating within Uniting Communities for over 20 years. Bfriend Community Workers are experienced in delivering this training to services within various sectors including aged care, homelessness, domestic violence and youth.

Who is this training for?

It is recommended for those seeking an introductory level of knowledge to LGBTIQA+ language and issues faced by this community, as a starting point for creating an environment that is inclusive of this diverse community. It aims to provide an opportunity to gain insights into LGBTIQA+ experiences, including building an understanding of:

- basic LGBTIQA+ terminology and the diversity within this community

- issues disproportionately affecting LGBTIQA+ people and why this occurs

- barriers faced by LGBTIQA+ individuals and in seeking support

- what can be done to support LGBTIQA+ people.
