About this event

What is LEGO® Based Therapy?

LEGO® Based Therapy is an evidence-based, play-based, social communication and development program, pioneered by paediatric neuropsychologist Dr. Daniel LeGoff in the mid 1990's (LeGoff et al, 2014). It is a child led, gentle and fun way of helping children develop social communication skills.

LEGO® Based Therapy is a strengths-based program that works by teaching children observation and adaptability skills. Research shows that children who participate in LEGO® Based Therapy programs respond more positively to this approach than to any other traditional form of intervention. Children learn to look to each other for information, support and are able to build relationships in a safe and respectful environment.

LEGO® Based Therapy is used to support children who experience a range of communication and social developmental challenges and is proven to be an effective therapy intervention for Autistic children, children with other neurodevelopmental conditions and children who experience Anxiety disorders, Phobias, Adjustment disorders and Depression. LEGO® Based Therapy provides children with the tools they need to adapt how they communicate and interact with others in a positive way.

Who can deliver LEGO® Based Therapy?

Whilst anyone can offer LEGO® building as free play sessions, only persons formally trained and certified in the approach can implement LEGO® Based Therapy. Persons without certified training are not qualified to be delivering any program with a "Therapy" aspect.

The NDIS code of conduct also dictates that all persons working within the NDIS space hold the necessary training, competence and formal qualifications to deliver the supports and services they deliver. Not only is this a requirement under the NDIS 'Code of Conduct', but it is also a requirement under the professional practice standards for all allied health / health professionals. Ref: NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, The NDIS Code of Conduct, March 2019.

Why Use LEGO® Based Therapy?

Through LEGO® Based Therapy, children learn to communicate, express their feelings, learn various ways of relating to others, modify their behaviour and develop problem-solving skills. It does not attempt to make Autistic / Neurodivergent children communicate more typically, but instead, provides them with the tools to adapt how they communicate.

The LEGO® system is a highly organised, systematic, and predictable toy, therefore highly motivating for children as the unpredictable and ever-changing concepts that occur during other types of free play are removed. This very nature of the LEGO® building system allows children to feel calm, regulated and engaged.
