Event description

Description

As part of Emergency Management Victoria's learning event "LEARNtember" 1 - 30 September, a workshop focused on human factors is being held.

LEARNtember is a month long event focused on sharing experiences and learning from each other with free sessions ranging from workshops, lunch lessons, bring a plate and a lesson morning teas, presentations and more.

Human factors encompass all those factors that can influence people and their behaviour. In a work context, human factors are the environmental, organisational and job factors, and individual characteristics which influence behaviour at work.

The Human Factors workshop, facilitated by Dr Claire Cooper (EMV) and Jamie Mackenzie (CFA), will draw on a range of Bushfire CRC and emergency sector research to explore the influence of human factors on decision making.

The session will cover:

  • Decision models and processes (e.g. pattern matching vs analysis of options)
  • Barriers to effective decision making (e.g. stress, time pressure, cognitive biases)
  • Expert strategies and techniques that can minimise barriers
  • Worst-case scenario thinking

This session will use a variety of case studies to explore decision making and provide the opportunity to practice some strategies in a real-world situation.
