Description

Welcome to Health City – how city planning and design now supports wellbeing

Have you ever lamented your low daily step-count, your greasy lunch choices, or a lack of motivation to hit the gym? You’re far from alone. Our modern lifestyles are contributing to illness now in plague proportions across the globe, driving a renewed focus on the importance of human wellbeing. Mindfulness workshops, meditation apps and fitness trackers have made headway, but imagine the possibilities if the whole city we lived in was designed and built to support our health?

Planning for ‘city wellbeing’ means utilising different aspects of urban environments to put concerns for health back into how we live our lives day-by-day. At our next Learn@Lunch session, Professor Susan Thompson from UNSW Built Environment will discuss her work to design health-supportive ways of living in 21st Century cities that will ensure a renewed focus on the health of all residents, as well as surrounding environments. She will unpack how designing, planning and managing better cities can support people being more physically active, socially connected and gaining better access to fresh and nutritious foods. In doing so, cities will support a healthier population and planet for all.
