This workshop explores Nature Pedagogy – the “why”, the approach to outdoor learning, the theorists, the benefits to children and it showcases what outdoor learning looks like in services – showing examples and also engaging in hands on nature play activities. It focuses on how you can implement nature pedagogy within the fence of an early learning centre or OSHC.

It is suitable for educators caring for children aged 0-12 with all workshop content mapped to the Early Years Learning Framework and My Time Our Place. This workshop will provide educators with the theoretical and practical knowledge and ideas, to embed nature play and outdoor learning into your existing curriculum and play within the boundaries of your service setting. It includes resources to support progression and whole service implementation.

Content: Early Childhood 1-day Workshop – Learning in and with Nature


  • Nature pedagogy – understanding the philosophy and theory (with practical activities) so educators understand the theory and foundations.
  • Benefits of outdoor learning and nature play – understanding the why and so we can communicate this to families and in our learning stories and documentation
  • Child led play and inquiry-based learning – what this looks like in practice and how this can be authentically done through nature play
  • How child led learning links to Loose Parts Play including nature's loose parts
  • Risky Play and how this is a normal part of childhood and is supported within the EYLF and NQS. Analyse a Risk-Benefit Assessment.
  • Showcase photos and videos of how other EC services are doing it every day
  • Explore techniques to implement the principles and practices of Nature Pedagogy in the context of your service play spaces within the fence.
  • Nature play links to EYLF – talking about the learning and how this can be communicated in our curriculum documents.
  • Explore how nature play connects with community and culture.

- Please wear comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes that allows you to move around outdoors, a sun hat and sunscreen (and a raincoat if its wet weather).

- Don’t forget to bring a pen and highlighter, we will provide you with printed handouts.

The course is delivered by experienced, qualified trainers with extensive knowledge and expertise in Nature play and Bush Kindy programs across Queensland and beyond. Our facilitators still work in the field and share hands on experience as well of services that we partner with.

Refreshments are provided and participants are to bring their own lunch.

Printed course materials and digital resources are provided.

Is this the right course for me? 

This training is suitable for educators caring for children aged 0-12 with all training content mapped to the Early Years Learning Framework and My Time Our Place that are employed in an Early Childhood Service or OSHC program.

Do I get a certificate completing this course? 

At the end of this course you will receive a hard copy printed certificate with the professional development hours included.  

Do I need previous experience or to be a registered teacher/educator? 

No! This 1-day workshop is for educators caring for children 0-12 with workshop content mapped to the Early Years Learning Framework and My Time Our Place. This workshop will provide educators with the theoretical and practical knowledge, to embed nature play & outdoor learning into your curriculum.

Is there an online version for this course?  

Unfortunately, we do not offer an online version of this course yet as it is very practical in nature. Throughout the day, we reinforce the theoretical knowledge by applying it in practice in nature settings at the venue.  How is the training day structured?  What are the expected workshop outcomes?

How is the training day structured?

The day is a combination of indoor and outdoor components, generally starting at 9am and finishing at 4pm. We will have morning and afternoon breaks along with lunch.

This workshop shares theoretical & practical knowledge and ideas. It explores Nature Pedagogy – the “why”, the approach to outdoor learning, the theorists, the benefits to children and it showcases what outdoor learning looks like in services- showing examples & also engaging in hands on nature play

Who will be delivering the course? 

The workshop is delivered by Rebecca Burch, Alex Brown or Anya Perkins. Our team has extensive experience and qualifications in Nature Pedagogy, and all currently still work in the field in Bush and Beach Kindy programs. 

What should I pack for the day?

The day is a combination of indoor and outdoor components for this reason, please check the weather and dress accordingly and please pack:    - comfortable clothing, shoes    - a sun hat, sunscreen - a pen and highlighter  

Are there practical skills involved in this workshop e.g., making fire or using tools? 

Introduction to more specific skills as making fire, using tools, playing with ropes, building huts, and whittling are only offer on our Bush Kindy Leader Course or personalised professional development training with Educator Skill Sets.  `

What kind of resources will be given to us?

Learning in and with Nature workshop printed powerpoint and notes . Service Director will also receive digital resources about nature play.

Can I share what my learning and resources gained during the course with my team? 

We give you ideas of how to inspire your colleagues, engage in reflective conversations and upskill your team. We remind organisations that Cottonwood Learning owns the Intellectual Property of the course, and it can't be used to train and provide Professional Development to others for profit.
